7th week at Gally...

Seven weeks had passed--I am halfway done with my very first semester at Gally!!!

I've learned so much within the last seven weeks in my ASL 103 class.

-Registers- Consulative, formal, casual, intimate, and frozen.
-William. C. Stokoe- Father of ASL Lingustics (He developed the handout of all symbols that shows the handshapes being used while signing.)
-A Video Clip of Dr. Ben Bahan (Chairperson of Deaf Study/ ASL Dept @ Gally. ) (titled: Emergence of Language) WOW! What an interesting video clip- In the summary of Dr. Ben Bahan's presentation, Gestures that are found in an expressive language of ASL will never VANISH! The process of acquisting our very own language can be easily identified in all areas of gestures, body language, the selection of facial expressions , and so on. In addition, the importance of how ASL was being developed as a language which is known to be recognized internationally. *Hands to him*

Now im looking foward to complete my 1st semester soon as in the terms of moving into the 2nd semester. WISH ME THE BEST LUCK ON MY MIDTERMS!! ( MIDTERM WEEK IS COMING OON- EKKKK!)

!!!LONG HIATUS!!!

To Bloggers&Vlogers

Welcome to my first blog!!! (no choice, really! no webcam! :( * )

Wow it has been a long time since I've posted some vlogs...
unfortunately my laptop broke a couple of months ago-- will probably cost me about 200 to 300 to have it fixed at best buy!!! ew!!!

ahh what can?should? i type in this blog?? mmm
oh yes.... i have a sad story to share with all of you, vloggers and bloggers... believe it or not but it is all true but very SADDDDD!!!!

Okay- lets begin with this... a month or two months ago.. i looked up for nanny jobs thru www.craigslist.com what a bizzare!!! but i found a nanny job that specifically said, " we, the special care nannies agency are searching for a wonderful nanny who can sign ASL and speaks well for a loving deaf - low vision 4 years old girl wtih a cochlear-implant in Potomac, MD."

Of course What else did I do?! I had to contact the agency immediately via email- they responded back the next day requesting for my application form. I turned everything in the very same day as well via fax per their request. I waited for a couple of days- finally they contacted me again electronically and was very much interested in me based on my outstanding application form. The secretary named molly who is a very, very nice woman from the agency and I met at the family's house for a short-informal interview. their ex-nanny joined us in the interview- asking away all of the good questions regarding the nanny job.
i had no problem with answering all of the questions- then i joined her to meet the girl, lily at her school. her school offers a mainstreaming program for the deaf or deaf-blind children. I didnt get the chance to get to know their program more which is unfortunate for me.
One or two weeks later, i finally got to meet with Lily's mother,Nancy at their house- we actually did hit it off by talking about so many things such as cochlear implant surgery, how lily became deaf, how she felt about all different schools, and why Lily couldnt go to MSD (Maryland School for the Deaf). At the end of our 2 to 3 hours lengthy conversation, we talked about me being a live-in nanny and how it would work for all of us.
another week passed, i received an email from Molly- it was sent to my pager-- when i finished reading the email- i was saddened and upsetted (sp) at the same time by the email.
here is what the email said-
" Jade,
I wanted to let you know what Nancy sent us. She truly did like you, but has to go with what Lily's teacher think is best.

molly copied this part from nancy's email to her.

"Just wanted to let you know that all of lily's teachers feel strongly that she be supported by a nanny with spoken english. therefore, as much i like jade sims, she cant be the candidate for this position. please let know and that i wish her the very best and the sole reason is lily's need for spoken language due to her low vision."

thank you jade for all your patient and understanding, I wish you the best of luck! it was a pleasure to meet you!
MOLLY.

WOWW!!!! what in the world are they thinking of???!?! Are they doing what is the best for LILY who is A 4 years old DEAF- BLIND girl with a cochlear-implant.. I MUST BEG TO DIFFER why? they practically are taking away her identity... especially her ability to use ASL! FYI- she signs more than she can talk... even her own ex nanny admitted to me that she will never speak clearly because of her voice. IM REALLY SADDENDED by this- what will become of LILY, I wonder??? Within a few hours later after i recieved the email- i responded to it-- saying that i didnt have the opportunity to meet with lily's teacher at all where i can lay everything out to her about what s the best for Lily. (in addition- there was no measurement given at all for a person who is able to sign ASL and speak well.. and is to be qualified for the position?!)
Unfortunately- they wanted to stick with their decision based on lily's teachers advice.

SO... the reason im typing this blog is to see if anyone of you can help me with this-- like what kind of action should i take in order to help Lily and myself?

THANK YOU FOR READING THIS BLOG!!!

FEEDBACKS WILL BE TRULY APPRECIATED!!!
